The Google Presumption and the Reality of Final Expense Insurance
In today's fast-paced world, almost every generation is involved in browsing the internet and social media using mobile devices. I remember back in 2005, when working with senior citizens over the age of 65, the vast majority of them didn’t even have an email address, let alone a computer. Fast forward 10 or 15 years, and now almost everyone has a smartphone and at least one social media account. It’s like the ultimate reunion. At one point, people had to attend class reunions to reconnect with those they went to grade school with, but now, everyone is part of the world’s yearbook, whether they like it or not.
I’d imagine almost everyone over 60 has, at some point, said, "I’m never going to get a smartphone," or "I’m never going to have a Facebook account," yet here they are, scrolling through feeds and staying connected. It’s a crazy concept. Even bowling alleys have evolved; gone are the days of keeping score with a pencil and paper. Now, the pins track your score on a monitor. Teachers used to fill in grade books with pencils, but now everything is electronic, and parents have real-time access to their kids’ grades. Accountability has shifted in many ways.
But what's truly wild is how often people rely on Google for answers, and how frequently this results in a buying decision. Many people don’t realize that Google search results are no different than a phone book with an opinion. Google tries to avoid favoring companies that pay more to top the search results, but this has led to those companies paying individuals who can achieve the same result through search engine optimization (SEO).
When it comes to brand names, people often pay more and convince themselves that the quality is better, even when it’s not. Some products are made in sweatshops by children, endorsed by celebrities or athletes, leading people to buy them simply to appear "cool." Even if it’s not actually cool, perception is reality.
So, what does this mean when it comes to final expense insurance? It’s probably a good idea to ensure that your family and friends perceive that you had your affairs in order, rather than leaving them behind to scramble for funds to cover your funeral. You can be buried with your Nike shoes, but it’s going to cost your family a lot more money if you haven’t made the proper arrangements.
